$0 Security Sprint

Find out whether you can recover a file

Use a made-up test file to check recovery from your existing backup or SharePoint version history. Prepare a request first if you need access or support.

No additional software purchase for the starting steps. Your time, storage and provider support may still have costs.

Entries stay in this tab and clear on reload. Do not enter passwords, secrets or confidential information.

01 / Tailor your starting point

What do you already know?

Choose “Not sure” when you need help. Changing any selection clears your observations and reported outcome.

Which recovery route do you already have?
Can you perform the checks with permission?
How would you like to begin?

02 / Work through your task

Before you begin

Part 1 of 7. Moving through the steps does not mark a check as complete.

  • Identify the service and the person responsible for recovery.
  • Do not assume desktop Office includes SharePoint, separate backups or recovery permissions.

03 / Record what you found

Your observations, kept in this tab

All fields are optional, up to 300 characters each. Use synthetic or non-sensitive summaries. No passwords, tokens, confidential data or personal contact details.

Synthetic contents, version and agreed objectives.

What opened, matched or failed?

Record the actual test duration, if tested.

Time or version of the recovered synthetic data.

A role or team is enough.

What still needs attention?

Optional observations or questions. Keep confidential details out.

What can you report for the stated result?

This task tests only a chosen synthetic file and route. It does not establish ransomware resilience, independent backup or recovery of an entire tenant, mailbox or business service. Preparation results do not verify operational protections.

Find out whether you can recover a file

Prepare a safe recovery check

Knowing that copies exist is different from knowing whether the right file can be recovered.

No additional software purchase for the starting steps. Your time, storage and provider support may still have costs.

  • Access: Not sure
  • Approach: Prepare first
  • Environment: Not sure

Local outcome: Not checked

Self-reported only. This website has not verified the result.

This task tests only a chosen synthetic file and route. It does not establish ransomware resilience, independent backup or recovery of an entire tenant, mailbox or business service.

Costs and permissions

Use existing records and services. No new software purchase is required to prepare; staff time and provider support may have costs.

Prerequisites

  • Identify the service and the person responsible for recovery.
  • Do not assume desktop Office includes SharePoint, separate backups or recovery permissions.

Actions

  1. Ask which recovery route you already have: a separate backup, native service recovery, another route, or an unknown route.
  2. Agree an approved synthetic test file containing no business or personal data. For a separate backup, arrange an approved separate restore destination with enough storage.
  3. Ask the owner to agree acceptable recovery time and how recent the recovered data needs to be. Confirm permission and the exact procedure before any restore.
  4. If the service, permission, recovery route or destination is missing, prepare the request below. Keep production data unchanged.

What to verify

  • Record whether a recovery route and owner were confirmed. Preparation alone does not establish recoverability.
  • Native version history is a file recovery feature. It does not demonstrate independent backup or whole-service recovery.

Recovery if something fails

  • Stop if the route or permissions are unclear. Ask the responsible team to resolve the gap and plan a scoped test.
  • Preserve original files and existing backups. Do not delete data, change retention or buy a replacement service during this exercise.

Request for the responsible team

Please confirm our existing recovery route and its owner. Can we agree a synthetic test file, permissions, a safe test location, acceptable recovery time and recovery point? For separate backups, please confirm a separate restore destination. Please identify any storage or support costs before testing.
